Pre-requisite qualifications

Students wishing to take this module must have passed an introduction to language study in the School of English or another department (examples include ‘Key Concepts in English Language’, a Level 1 module in Linguistics and Phonetics such as ‘Language: Structure and Sound’, or similar modules in other departments). Students must also have passed two Level 2 modules in language study (in the School of English and in other departments such as Linguistics and Phonetics) and will ideally have shown a commitment to the study of the English language that prepares them for the proposed dissertation.

Module summary

The dissertation provides students with the opportunity to plan, design and execute an independent piece of research related to the study of the English language, self-directed and with appropriate time-management.

Objectives

Students should have developed abilities to:

1. Develop a topic;
2. Make and test hypotheses;
3. Choose a relevant methodology;
4. Construct a coherent argument;
5. Abstract and synthesise information;
6. Critically evaluate evidence and/or data;
7. Write in an appropriate style.

Students will participate in seminars, lectures, collaborative workshops with other students, individual supervision sessions with tutors, and self-directed independent research.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Plan an autonomous research project.
2. Exhibit skills of critical and flexible thinking.
3. Compose a sustained argument, supported by evidence.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Select and use computational tools for the analysis of data (Digital Skills)
2. Develop effective methods for analysis and interpretation using qualitative approaches (Work Ready Skills)
3. Communicate ideas, arguments and evidence in speech and writing. (Sustainability Skills).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students get feedback through their participation in seminars with staff and other students.

They receive formative feedback on 2 x 1500-word submissions in first and second semester by comments and in individual meetings with tutors.

Students receive feedback from tutors and other students in sessions before the poster session and then feedback from staff on the posters at the poster conference.
